Williams, Sharapova cruise into 4th round

Serena Williams was so dominant in her 6-1, 6-1 third-round win over Greta Arnat the Australian Open that there’s probably only one shot she’ll remember more than most.

At 5-0 and a point from winning the first set, Williams lined up in the ideal position for an overhead but then completely shanked it, spraying the ball wide. She screamed and put a hand over her face.

“It was an awkward smash. Then she missed one and I felt a little better,” Williams said. “I felt like, ‘Am I losing my mind out here?’ Everyone sometimes hits a shot that’s a little bit insane—you just got to allow yourself to get over it.”

Maria Sharapova beat Angelique Kerber 6-1, 6-2 in the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday, showing no signs of rustiness despite her limited preparation for the season’s first major.

The fourth-seeded Sharapova, who was nursing a left ankle injury prior to the Australian Open, has dropped only five games in her first three matches.

Sharapova, the 2008 Australian Open champion, will next play former U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova or Sabine Lisicki.
