Philippine Chess advocate sponsors chess tourney
A newly-organized group whose members call themselves Chess Benefactors extends support to local chessers by providing cash incentives to the top five (5) winners in Open and All-Student (20-yr old & below) categories in this year’s first chess competition dubbed as “ 2012 Blatz & Bolitz Chess Tournament” on February 4-5 (Saturday & Sunday).
This two-day seven (7) rd Swiss System Format serves as the basis to upgrade club ratings of local chess enthusiasts & as well as the final phase of preparation for Palaro-bound CVIRAA top board champion Michael Canizares, a Grade 5 pupil of Tagbilaran City Central School.
Canizares’ personal coach, National Master (NM) Elmer Sumngat is installed as the top bet in the Open Category. Out to challenge him for the champion’s purse are national campaigner Glenn Pardillo Jr of Tubigon, Balilihan’s Ricardo Ocoy, Comelec’s Siegfried Saniel, Dr Peter Rosell, Maribojoc’s George Vencilao, Dauis’ Norman Longjas, DENR’s Jenesis Apog and DepEd’s Rufo Castro.
While Canizares expects a tough not to crack from a bunch of title contenders led by HNU’s Gwendulith Calacar, Mansasa High School’s Welfredo Besinga, Michael Murcia of Tubigon’s Mater Dei, VDT-ALC’s Mark Bryan Villarojo & Loon’s top female player, Nicole Flores.
