DLSU remains spotless in women’s volleyball

Same line-up, same defensive intensity, same results. Michelle Gumabao’s 11 points and an overall defensive clamp-down gave defending champion La Salle its 10th straight win drubbing University of the East, 25-22, 25-18, 25-18 in the 74th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Lady Warriors kept the game close only in the first set behind the combined offensive efforts of Jimberly Dizon and Sarina Bulan.

However, La Salle’s offensive trio—team captain Cha Cruz, Abigail Maraño and Michelle Gumabao—provided the points when they needed them to close out the first set at 25-22.

Melissa Gohing then stepped up in the second set as the Lady Spikers’ senior libero made key receives that La Salle translated into points to halt any flow that UE’s offense could find. DLSU sealed the set with a 25-18 finish.

The Lady Spikers kept their starters throughout the last set, with Gumabao switching with Gohing or Mika Esperanza, as they looked to close out the game.

UE momentarily grabbed a 15-14 lead in the last set but it was shortlived as Gumabao would steadily close out the set with her attacks while Maraño and Cruz put up a defensive wall to seal the win, 25-18.

Gumabao was the only Lady Spiker to finish in double digits with 11 points while Cruz scored nine. Jimberly Dizon had nine markers for the Lady Warriors.
