Djokovic, Nadal advance into 4th round

Defending champion Novak Djokovic was nearly flawless in a 6-0, 6-1, 6-1 win against Frenchman Nicolas Mahut in a third-round match yesterday at the Australian Open.

When Mahut won his first game in the second set, he stretched his arms out as he walked back to the baseline, playing up to the Rod Laver Arena crowd that he’d finally won a game. Djokovic hit the lines with his forehands, and converted backhand drop shots and deft lobs.

Every time Mahut tried to serve and volley, Djokovic would hit the return at his feet, cutting down the Frenchman’s options. When Djokovic made one of his rare unforced errors the crowd groaned—not so much in disappointment but in disbelief.

Rafael Nadal showed glimpses of his very best form to make round four of the Australian Open with a crushing win against Slovak qualifier Lukas Lacko.

Nadal won 6-2 6-4 6-2 in an hour and 55 minutes and the world number two next plays 18th seed Feliciano Lopez.

Roger Federer was no less impressive in a hard-fought 7-6 (8-6) 7-5 6-3 victory over Ivo Karlovic and he will face Bernard Tomic.
